If you’re on your spiritual journey, you might be feeling like what am I doing wrong? Why am I suffering when all the other people around me (who are not spiritual) are doing just fine? So why am I stressing about living a spiritual life?
So you think about giving up spirituality but end up realizing there is no going back. The other path no longer feels aligned with you. And you start to feel stuck because your problems no longer feel like they are ending any sooner. And I’m going to be honest with you, they won’t end until you learn why they are here. But the question is why do spiritual people suffer more when they are always trying to do their best? Let’s learn.
Spiritual People suffer because of Sensitivity
Although every human being goes through suffering. But the pain is heightened when you’re extra sensitive. Spiritual people tend to be more sensitive because many of them have faced a rough childhood where they felt unsafe. But when they grew up that unsafe feeling remained there. Even a slight trigger is enough to awaken their survival instincts and make them feel pain.
Spiritual growth
Without pain and suffering, there cannot be Spiritual growth. It is the suffering that leads Spiritual people in their spiritual journey. Without pain, they won’t try to change their life. Why?
Because suffering causes pain and that pain fuels the Spiritual people to do something to get rid of it. Often Spiritual people go from one door to another, seeking answers for their suffering. They read books, watch YouTube videos, or seek Spiritual gurus so that they can make the pain go away or at least know the reason behind the pain and suffering. This pain becomes their guiding force so that they can remember who they are and return HOME.
Willingness to change
It is pain that makes us see through the veil, that forces us to get out of autopilot mode and see things in a new light. Suffering enables spiritual people to admit that their old ways of doing things are no longer working or they worked in the past but now they need to change. Suffering fuels the process of change and makes spiritual people do things they never saw themselves doing.
Bringing unconsciousness to the surface
Suffering is nothing but emotions that we have pushed away because they made us feel weak or vulnerable. In such cases, suffering comes as a blessing because then we can learn to embrace our emotions instead of pushing them away.
Emotions are discomfort or dis-ease in our bodies and when we continue to push these emotions away, this dis-ease eventually transforms into some kind of disease. So we must start to learn the art of alchemy, and transmute pain or suffering into endless possibilities.
Beyond pain
When spiritual people suffer or when we are in pain, we only see ourselves as a victim to our reality but when we rise above that pain, we realize our true power. Spiritual people suffer a lot because through this suffering they learn who they are, in that moment they realize the importance of that pain and suffering and start to embrace it.
In India, some spiritual gurus inflict themselves pain by walking on nails, meditating in harsh environments, fasting for weeks or months even, etc. All of this is because they know the power of pain and suffering. They know the pain will deepen their spiritual practice. You don’t have to go to any extremity, just learn the art of embracing the NOW.
When we are in pain, we just want to get out of it. But when we start to embrace the present moment, endless opportunities come into our lives and we start to feel aligned with our true purpose. So the next time life gives you lemons, remember to embrace it with your heart open. Don’t try to change anything about it, just sit through it. Be willing to see what’s on the other side of pain. I highly recommend you meditate a lot in these times and read books like The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
